Academic Affairs Restructuring

PROVOST DETAILS CHANGES IN ACADEMIC AFFAIRS OFFICE

     COLUMBUS -- Ohio State University Provost Richard Sisson
today (5/19) detailed previously announced organizational changes
in the Office of Academic Affairs that, he said, will make the
office "more efficient, more effective, and better able to guide
and support academic excellence."

     The changes, scheduled to take place on July 1, will reduce
by one the number of upper administrative positions within the
Office of Academic Affairs. There are presently three vice
provosts and three associate provosts. Under the restructuring
plan, there will be five positions, all of which will carry the
title of vice provost. No salary increases beyond normal merit
increases are included in the plan.

     Sisson said that the changes in Academic Affairs are
intended to reduce the number of units reporting directly to the
provost -- a number that currently stands at 37, to enhance
management of important university activities, and to reduce
costs. He also noted that he and the vice provosts will be
working closely with the vice president for research, Edward
Hayes, in coordinating efforts of the two offices.

     The following titles for vice provosts will be adopted when
the changes take effect:

     =FE Vice provost for academic program support;

     =FE Vice provost for academic program evaluation and
coordination;

     =FE senior vice provost for planning, budgets and resource
management, and chief information officer;

     =FE vice provost for academic policy, personnel and
administration;

     =FE vice provost for minority affairs.

     Sisson said that he will recommend to President E. Gordon
Gee that Associate Provost Robert L. Arnold be named vice provost
for academic program support; that Edward J. Ray continue in his
position as senior vice provost for planning, budgets and
resource management, and chief information officer; and that
Associate Provost Nancy M. Rudd be named vice provost for
academic policy, personnel and administration.

     Sisson noted that a search is currently under way to fill
the position soon to be vacated by Associate Provost Don M. Dell.
His successor will be named vice provost for academic program
evaluation and coordination. A search is also under way for the
position of vice provost for minority affairs. LeRoy Pernell is
currently holding that position on an interim basis. Both
searches should be completed before July 1.

     The following outlines the responsibilities for each vice
