Al Sharpton to Speak at Affirmative Action Program

AL SHARPTON TO SPEAK ON AFFIRMATIVE ACTION IN HIGHER EDUCATION

     COLUMBUS --  Black activist the Rev. Al Sharpton will speak 
at The Ohio State University Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. in the Ohio Union 
East ballroom, 1739 N. High St., as part of a discussion on 
Affirmative Action in Higher Education.  The program is free and 
open to the public.

     Sharpton's address will follow a panel discussion moderated 
by Jerry Revish of WBNS-TV.  Panelists include Frank W. Hale Jr., 
vice provost emeritus for minority affairs; William Nelson Jr., 
professor of black studies and political science; and LeRoy 
Pernell, vice provost for minority affairs and professor of law.  
A question and answer period will directly follow the panel 
discussion before Sharpton's presentation.

     Ordained a minister at the age of 9, Sharpton is the 
national director of the National Rainbow Coalition's Ministers 
Division and founder of the National Action Network, an 
organization that produces weekly radio programs that air on 
black-owned radio stations.

     Sharpton, who is active in New York City civil rights 
issues, recently declared himself a candidate for the Democratic 
nomination for mayor of New York City. He made unsuccessful bids 
for the New York Democratic Senate nomination in 1992 and 1994.

     The program is sponsored by the Office of Minority Affairs 
and the Frank W. Hale Jr. Black Cultural Center.
