Aldama and Olivas highlight Latino/a Studies celebration

The Latino/a Studies Program at The Ohio State University announces its year-ending celebration as part of its Latino/a Studies Lecture Series. A reading by two prominent authors, book signing, and reception will be held Monday (5/8) at the Faculty Club from 4-6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Ohio State English professor and award-winning author and editor, Frederick Aldama, who teaches Chicano/a, Latino/a, and postcolonial literature, comic books, and film, will read from his most recent book, Spilling the Beans in Chicanolandia, which highlights the changing works of third wave Chicano/a artists and authors, including Daniel Olivas. His other books include Dancing With Ghosts: A Critical Biography of Arturo Islas, Postethnic Narrative Criticism, and Brown on Brown: Chicano/a Representations of Gender, Sexuality, and Ethnicity.

Renowned author and attorney, Daniel Olivas, will also read from his latest novel, Devil Talk: Stories, and discuss his life as a lawyer and writer. From Los Angeles, Olivas received his bachelor's degree in English literature from Stanford University and law degree from UCLA. He is an attorney with the California Department of Justice and specializes in environmental enforcement and land use.

Following the readings, both authors will sign their books at a reception.


"We believe that this book reception signals Ohio State's cross-campus commitment to a vibrant, growing place for Latino/a Studies at the university," said Patricia Enciso, coordinator of the Latino/a Studies Program. "We think this event will bring Latino/a Studies to the Oval?during the week of Cinco de Mayo, when students and faculty will have the opportunity to experience Latino/a and Chicano/a perspectives through scholarship and artistry.&rdquo"

The event is supported by Ohio State's Latino/a Studies Program, CIRIT (Clusters of Interdisciplinary Research on International Themes), Department of English, Department of Spanish and Portuguese, Multicultural Center's Office of Hispanic Student Services, Office of Minority Affairs, and Colleges of the Arts and Sciences.
