American Indian Powwow to be held this weekend

The American Indian Council at The Ohio State University will host the Third Annual Powwow from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, (4/8 and 9) at the French Field House, 460 Woody Hayes Dr. on the Ohio State Campus.

The public is invited to learn about the cultures of American Indians at the ceremony, which is themed "Preserving our Past, Founding our Future." There will be traditional dress, crafts, food, dancing and music, as well as a drum contest. There is no charge for parking and admission.

The Powwow is being held in conjunction with the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) Regional Conference, which takes place from Friday through Sunday (4/7 - 9) at Ohio State. The conference, "Many Nations – One Community: Merging Pathways to Unity," brings American Indian students to campus for workshops, sessions on American Indian history in Ohio, and the Powwow. They represent the AISES region that includes the U.S. midwest and east coast, as well as Canada.

In addition, on Wednesday (4/12), Ohio State's American Indian Studies program will present the second in its new lecture series – Native Ohio: Leaders and Landscape in the Cradle of American Indian Studies. Joe Saunders, Louisiana Archaeological Survey will deliver "Oldest Mounds in America? The Middle Archaic (+5,000 years old) Mound Sites of Northeast Louisiana" from 7 - 9 p.m. in 210 Main Library, 1858 Neil Ave. Future lectures are April 26 and May 10.
