DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI WILL LEAD ANNUAL FUND APPEALS
COLUMBUS -- Two alumni have shown their commitment to
pursuits of excellence at The Ohio State University by agreeing
to head up this year's annual fund drives.
Buckeye basketball All-American and former NBA star John J.
Havlicek will chair the 1993-94 University Annual Fund, while
Columbus area business leader and long-time Ohio State supporter
Charles Y. Lazarus will chair the College/School Annual Fund.
The University Annual Fund contributes funds to university-
wide programs such as the Distinguished Teaching and Research
awards, staff awards, university fellowships, graduate student
research, and the National Merit initiative which brings the
nation's top high school students to Ohio State. The funds
raised also provide flexibility to the president and the provost
in meeting unexpected needs.
The College/School Annual Fund assists the needs of specific
colleges by providing support for projects within each academic
area, including scholarships and fellowships, alumni activities,
teaching recognition, equipment purchases, and library
acquisitions, as well as other programs identified by deans and
directors.
All alumni are solicited in both appeals, either by phone or
mail. Two direct mail appeals are planned for the University
Annual Fund for 1993-94 in November and April. A phone appeal is
scheduled for Winter Quarter for past donors to the annual fund
and selected alumni non-donors. Three College/School mailings
are scheduled for the year in October, February and May.
Havlicek, a 1962 education graduate, was a member of the
1960 NCAA championship basketball team at Ohio State. He played
for the Boston Celtics for 16 years, setting the record for the
most number of games played in the NBA. He was elected to the
Basketball Hall of Fame in 1984 and the Ohio State Athletic Hall
of Fame in 1977. In addition to hosting many Ohio State
events in Boston, he and his wife, Beth Evans Havlicek, a 1964
graduate, have also been involved in organizing benefits and fund
raisers for a number of charities.
Lazarus has been active in Ohio State organizations for over
30 years. He has served on the Development Fund, University
Hospitals, and Alumni Advisory boards, and is presently serving
on The Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Research Institute
Foundation Board. He is a member of the Presidents Club at the
Presidents Council level, and is also a lifetime member of the
university's Alumni Association. He and his wife, Dorothy
Lazarus, have supported areas across the campus, from the
Historic Costume and Textiles Collection to Athletics to WOSU.
He is chairman emeritus of Lazarus Department Stores.
