annual fund drives

 COLUMBUS -- Erin Moriarty, television correspondent for CBS News 48 Hours
and a 1977 Ohio State law grad, joins Buckeye Basketball All-American and
former NBA star John J. Havlicek in leading this year's annual fund drives
for The Ohio State University.
 Moriarty will chair this year's College/School Annual Fund, and, for the
second year in a row, Havlicek will chair the University Annual Fund.
 The University Annual Fund contributes funds to university-wide programs
such as the Distinguished Teaching and Research awards, staff awards,
university fellowships, graduate student research, and the National Merit
Scholar initiative which brings the nation's top high school students to
Ohio State. The funds raised also allow the president and the provost to
respond to unexpected needs and opportunities.
 The College/School Annual Fund assists the needs of specific colleges by
providing support for projects within each academic area, including
scholarships and fellowships, alumni activities, teaching recognition,
equipment purchases, and library acquisitions, as well as other programs
identified by deans and directors.
 All alumni are solicited in both appeals, either by phone or mail. Two
direct mail appeals are planned for the University Annual Fund for 1994-95
in November and April. A phone appeal is scheduled for Winter Quarter for
past donors to the annual fund and selected alumni non-donors. Three
College/School mailings are scheduled in October, February and May.
 Moriarty, who received both her bachelors and law degrees from Ohio State,
has worked on the top-rated news program 48 Hours since 1990. As a young
lawyer in Columbus, she became co-host of the local PM Magazine - the start
of an impressive, rising career in broadcast journalism. News reporting jobs
in Cleveland, Chicago and Baltimore eventually led her to CBS in 1986 where
she contributed to CBS This Morning and the Evening News. Moriarty serves on
Ohio State's President's National Advisory Council on Public Affairs and the
National Council of Ohio State Women. She recently appeared in and narrated
a video for Ohio State's College of Law.
 Havlicek, a 1962 education graduate, was a member of the 1960 NCAA
championship basketball team at Ohio State. He played for the Boston Celtics
for 16 years, setting the record for the most number of games played in the
NBA. He was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1984 and the Ohio
State Athletic Hall of Fame in 1977. In addition to hosting many Ohio State
events in Boston, he and his wife Beth Evans Havlicek, a 1964 graduate, have
also been involved in organizing benefits and fund raisers for a number of
charities. Havlicek also served as chair of the University Annual Fund drive
in 1993-94.
