Battelle + Joyce Scholars Named

LOCAL STUDENTS RECEIVE BATTELLE AND JOYCE SCHOLARSHIPS

     COLUMBUS -- Eighteen Central Ohio honors students who
graduated from high school this spring have received Battelle
Scholarships or Glenna Joyce Scholarships at The Ohio State
University.

     Both scholarship programs recognize students who have
demonstrated high academic achievement in high school and who
intend to pursue honors work at the college level.  The Battelle
Program also emphasizes leadership ability.

     The scholarships are open to students in Delaware,
Fairfield, Franklin, Licking, Madison, Pickaway and Union
counties and cover four years of undergraduate study.  The
Battelle Scholarship provides tuition and fees, currently valued
at $3,087 per year.  The Joyce Scholarship covers tuition and
fees, plus room and board, books and miscellaneous expenses,
currently valued at about $10,500 per year.

     Following is a list of the recipients:

JOYCE SCHOLARS

     Thomas B. Beardslee, son of Michael and Bonnie Beardslee of
COLUMBUS (43229).  A graduate of Fort Hayes Arts and Academic
High School where he participated in the jazz band, "In the Know"
team, and school magazine, Thomas is a National Merit Scholar.
He plans to study biology and pursue a career in medicine.

     Elizabeth Conover, daughter of Richard and Connie Conover of
GAHANNA.  A graduate of Gahanna Lincoln High School where she was
business manager of the school newspaper, first chair in the
concert band and a member of the flag corps, Elizabeth also was a
delegate to Buckeye Girls State and a member of the National
Honor Society.  She plans to study engineering at Ohio State.

     Jason Green, son of Robert and Norma Green of MOUNT
STERLING.  A graduate of Madison Plains High School where he
helped found a literary club and magazine, Jason is a National
Merit Scholar.  He plans to study electrical engineering at Ohio
State.

     T. J. Hersch, son of Linda Hersch of PICKERINGTON and Bill
Hersch.  A graduate of Pickerington High School, where he was
first in his class and active in band and sports, he plans to
major in political science, followed by law school.

     Soren Koelling of COLUMBUS.  A graduate of Fort Hayes Arts
and Academic High School, he is a member of the National Honor
Society and attended the Governor's Institute for Gifted and
Talented Students.  He plans to study either engineering or
architecture.

     Michael Kreeger, son of Bob and C.J. Kreeger of DUBLIN.  A
graduate of Dublin High School, Michael was a member of numerous
bands, including the Ohio All-State Band and the Columbus Youth
Jazz Ensemble.  He plans to study engineering at Ohio State.

     Yao-Li Lin, daughter of Jiunn-Fong and Chiou-Chih Lin of
COLUMBUS (43228).  A graduate of Westland High School where she
was first in her class and a member of the Student Council, Yao-
Li attended the Governor's Institute for Gifted and Talented
Students.  She plans to study pharmacy at Ohio State.

BATTELLE SCHOLARS

     Teko S. Ananou, son of Ayele Adjoavi Ananou of COLUMBUS
(43201).  A graduate of Linden McKinley High School, Teko came to
this country in 1993 from Togo, West Africa.  He was treasurer of
the German Club, a member of the Student Council and active in
sports.  He plans to study electrical engineering.

     Mark D. Baker, son of Lewis and Kathryn Baker of GAHANNA.  A
graduate of St. Charles Preparatory School where he received a
gold medal on the national Latin exam and played baseball, he
plans to study pre-medicine at Ohio State.

     Jeffrey A. Brown, son of Richard and Nancy Brown of
PATASKALA.  A graduate of Watkins Memorial High School where he
was first in his class, president of the National Honor Society
and a member of the football, baseball and tennis teams, he plans
to study physical therapy at Ohio State.

     Jennifer L. Drignat, daughter of Joseph and Rosemarie
Drignat of PICKERINGTON.  A graduate of Pickerington High School
where she was first in her class and a member of the Drama Club,
she has been a dancer since she was 3 and has volunteered over
1,000 at COSI.  She plans to study chemical engineering at Ohio
State.

     Aladin M. Gohar, son of Mohamed and Randa Gohar of
PICKERINGTON.  A graduate of Pickerington High School, he was
member of the National Honor Society, the Science Club and the
choir.  He has volunteered at the University Medical Center and
plans to pursue advanced degrees in engineering and medicine.

     Brett C. Irvin, son of Dr. and Mrs. Keith Irvin of POWELL.
A graduate of Olentangy High School where he was first in his
class, president of the marching and concert bands, and a varsity
golfer, he plans to study microbiology and nutrition.

     Aaron Kahn, son of Luis and Hazel Kahn of COLUMBUS (43214).
A graduate of Columbus Alternative High School where he was on
the Super Honor Roll and played both saxophone and clarinet in
various bands, he was also a student ambassador to Israel.  He
plans to study psychology at Ohio State.

     Charis R. Miller, daughter of Paul and Margo Miller of
WESTERVILLE.  A graduate of Westerville North High School where
she was first in her class, president of the orchestra and a
regional qualifier in track, she plans to study engineering at
Ohio State.

     Peter B. Riley, son of James F. Riley and Nan Hadley of
COLUMBUS (43206).  A graduate of Columbus Alternative High School
where he was cartoonist for the newspaper and a member of the "In
the Know" team, he plays bass in multiple musical groups,
including the Columbus Youth Jazz Ensemble.  He plans to study
history at Ohio State.

     David A. Schoeff, son of Eric and Kristin Schoeff of
COLUMBUS (43202).  A graduate of Linden McKinley High School
where he was first in his class and active in band and baseball,
he was an assistant basketball coach for the Clintonville Boys'
Association.  He plans to study civil engineering.

     Isao Shoji, son of Shuneki and Minori Shoji of HILLIARD.  A
graduate of Hilliard High School where he was first in his class
and president of the National Honor Society, active in choir,
drama and athletics, he will study either engineering or pre-
medicine at Ohio State.
