Bestselling author visits Ohio State tonight

Barbara Ehrenreich, author of a New York Times bestseller “Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting by in America,” will present a public lecture at 7:30 tonight (10/20) in Room 100 of Independence Hall, 1923 Neil Ave. Due to overwhelming interest in this event, Room 14 in University Hall, 230 North Oval Mall, will serve as a satellite venue and feature a live broadcast of the lecture for Ohio State faculty, staff and students who do not hold tickets.

Sponsored by the Ohio State Office of Undergraduate Admissions and First Year Experience and various departments, Ehrenreich is the second author this month to participant in “Buckeye Book Community,” one of the largest summer reading programs in the country for first-year college students. Scott McCartney, author of “Eniac: The Triumphs and Tragedies of the World’s First Computer,” visited Oct. 16.

Ehrenreich’s book explores the lives of the millions of Americans who work for minimum wage. She goes “undercover” in various jobs to report the financial realities of making ends meet on $6-7 an hour.

Participating students selected between the two featured titles during summer orientation sessions. This year, approximately 6,000 complimentary books were distributed. Faculty-led debates and group discussions in classes and residence halls also are held leading up to the guest author’s visit.
