Birthday Party to Fund Hayes Chair

BIRTHDAY PARTY WILL FUND WOODY HAYES CHAIR AT OHIO STATE

     COLUMBUS -- A birthday party for Anne Hayes, widow of former
Ohio State University Football Coach Woody Hayes, will help
establish an endowed chair in her late husband's name.

     The special dinner party celebrating Anne Hayes' 80th
birthday will be held at 6 p.m., Friday, Feb. 11, at the Aladdin
Temple Shrine, 3850 Stelzer Road.  Tickets are $100 each, $70 of
which is tax deductible.  Proceeds from the event will fund the
Wayne Woodrow Hayes Chair in National Security Studies at Ohio
State.

     Speaking at the event will be former University of Michigan
Coach Bo Schembechler and former Ohio Governor James Rhodes.
Two-time Ohio State Heisman Trophy winner Archie Griffin will be
master of ceremonies.  Video appearances will be made by Indiana
University Coach Bob Knight and golfer Jack Nicklaus.

     As part of the event, several items will be auctioned off,
including Coach Hayes' 1968 National Championship ring, his 1971
and 1976 Rose Bowl and 1978 Sugar Bowl watches and other Ohio
State football memorabilia.

     Coach Hayes, who died in 1987, was deeply interested in
military history, peace and national security issues.  The Hayes
Chair, which will be housed at Ohio State's Mershon Center,
acknowledges Hayes' strong belief in the values of education and
patriotism.

     The Hayes Chair will be held by an internationally
recognized scholar of national security who will help lead the
university's commitment to research and education in U.S.
security matters, foreign policy, arms control and military
issues.  The Chair will be housed at the Mershon Center, Ohio
State's center for research and education in national security.

     "We believe establishing the Wayne Woodrow Hayes Chair in
National Security Studies is a more fitting way to honor him than
something with a football theme," said James E. Harf, a professor
of political science at the Mershon Center.  "Hayes was much more
than a football coach and it's time for us to recognize his great
contributions."

     So far, private gifts and pledges have provided over
$900,000 of the $1.5 million necessary to fund the chair.  The
public campaign to complete the funding kicks off with the
birthday party for Anne Hayes.
