OSU CELEBRATES HISTORY AND ACHIEVEMENT OF AFRICAN AMERICANS

COLUMBUS -- From the sounds of vendors marketing their wares 
to the smell of "soul food" wafting through the air, The Ohio 
State University will celebrate black heritage with the United 
Black World Month, Jan. 31-Feb. 29.   

"United Black World Month is to history as an appetizer is 
to a meal-- it simply prepares you for the main course," said 
Joyce Vaughan, director of African American Student Services.  
"It is a heightened awareness to what should be celebrated and 
studied all year."

The month-long celebration will kick off with a march Feb. 1 
at 5 p.m. from the Frank W. Hale Jr. Black Cultural Center, 153 
W. 12th Ave., to the Ohio Union Conference Theater, 1739 N. High 
St., and culminate with a series of speakers, dancing, and music.

Now in its 26th year, United Black World Month was 
originally a week-long celebration.  It was expanded to a month 
three years ago in response to demand from students to 
incorporate more activities that address various issues and 
concerns.

"It is a time to celebrate and to educate the community 
about our heritage," Vaughan said.

The festivities will begin with a presentation of "Living 
the Dream: Successful Blacks in the American Business and 
Entrepreneurial World," live via satellite from Washington, D.C. 
Jan. 31 from 12:45 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Drinko 
Hall, 55 W. 12th Ave. 

Other activities include:

-- Soul food luncheons in the Ohio Union Terrace Dining Room 
Feb. 2, 5-9, 16 and 23.  A variety of African American cuisine 
will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.  The cost of the buffet 
style lunch and drink is $6.50.

-- "Voices from the Village," a series of videos produced 
by WOSU featuring prominent African American scholars discussing 
issues related to the black community.  Discussions led by black 
student organizations will follow the videos Feb. 5, 12, 19, and 
26 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Hale Center.

-- "Children's Cultural Hour," designed to teach children 
about African American history and to promote pride and respect 
for African American culture.  Taught by African American student 
organizations Feb. 6, 13, 20, and 27 from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. in 
the Hale Center.

-- "No Laughing Matter, The Images of Minorities in Comic 
Books," a lecture by Denys Cowan, creator of ICON for DC Comics, 
that deals with identity and portrayal of African Americans in 
comic books, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. in the Ohio Union Conference 
Theater.

-- Brown Bag with Carlyle Brown, author of Yellow Moon 
Rising  Feb. 14 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Hale Center.

-- "Black Miseducation," a workshop by the Afrikan Student 
Awareness party examining the historical perspective of the 
educational evolutionary process of African people in America 
Feb. 20 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Hale Center.

-- "Media Assassination," a workshop to address the depth 
to which contemporary media images of black people affect current 
perceptions of self and community Feb. 27 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 
p.m. in the Hale Center.
