Blood battle, pep rallies highlight Beat Michigan Week 2003

COLUMBUS –During Beat Michigan Week 2003, giving blood and cheering during a pep rally are just a couple of the ways The Ohio State University community shows its Buckeye pride.

The events, which will continue through Friday (11/21), will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Ohio State vs. University of Michigan football game. This year’s game is in Ann Arbor, Saturday (11/22).

One longstanding tradition in Beat Michigan Week is the annual blood battle between Ohio State and University of Michigan. The weeklong event gives the Columbus community the opportunity to donate blood in more than 30 locations across Ohio State’s campus. The university that donates the most units of blood to the American Red Cross will be recognized during Saturday’s football game.
Another Beat Michigan Week tradition is “Wing the Wolverines” when Ohio State students, faculty and staff can taste a variety of free chicken wings and then vote for the “Best Wings on Campus.” The wing-off is 7 p.m. today (11/18) at the Ohio Union, 1739 N. High St.

Along with giving blood and sampling chicken wings, the Beat Michigan pep rallies provide other opportunities to show Buckeye pride.

Physical rehabilitation patients at The Ohio State University Medical Center will show their support of the Scarlet and Gray as they participate in a pep rally at noon Wednesday (11/19) in the Dodd Hall gymnasium, 480 W. 9th Ave. Along with the Ohio State Alumni Band, the university’s first female drum major and a physical therapist at the Medical Center will lead the patients, many in wheelchairs, around the gym to form “Script Ohio.”

Another pep rally featuring the cheerleaders and members of the Ohio State football team will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday (11/20) on the South Oval.
