Board Appoints Deans to Key Roles

BOARD APPOINTS DEANS TO KEY ROLES IN ACADEMIC LEADERSHIP

     COLUMBUS -- The Ohio State University Board of Trustees
Friday (6/3) created three academic leadership roles at the
university, and appointed prominent deans to the posts.

     The three are:

     =FE Manuel Tzagournis to the position of vice president for
health sciences.

     =FE Nancy Zimpher to the position of executive dean of the
professional colleges.

     =FE James Garland to the position of executive dean of the
Colleges of the Arts and Sciences.

     All three will serve as members of the President's Executive
Committee.  The three will assume the positions on July 1.  They
will serve at their current salaries, subject to normal merit
increases.

     Tzagournis at present is vice president for health services
and dean of the College of Medicine.  The trustees abolished the
position of vice president for health services, and established
the vice president for health sciences under a restructuring plan
proposed by Provost Richard Sisson.  Tzagournis will continue to
serve as dean of the College of Medicine until a new dean is
named.

     The vice president for health sciences is responsible for
providing academic and fiscal leadership for the colleges of
Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Optometry, Pharmacy and Veterinary
Medicine.

     As executive dean of the cluster of professional colleges,
Zimpher will coordinate the complementary activities of the
colleges of Agriculture, Education, Engineering, Human Ecology,
Law and the Max M. Fisher College of Business.  She will
encourage the development and coordination of intercollege
curricular and program initiatives.

     Zimpher is currently dean of the College of Education.

     In his position as executive dean of the Colleges of the
Arts and Sciences, Garland will encourage the development and
coordination of intercollege curricular and program initiatives
within the five member colleges of the arts and sciences: Arts,
Biological Sciences, Humanities, Mathematical and Physical
Sciences, and Social and Behavioral Sciences.  He will also have
line management responsibilities for the University Honors
Program, the university's three ROTC units, and the Office of
Undergraduate Studies in the Colleges of the Arts and Sciences.

     Garland is a professor of physics and dean of the College of
Mathematical and Physical Sciences.

     The board also approved having upper level positions in the
Office of Academic Affairs carry the title of vice provost.  The
changes are part of a restructuring plan for the provost's
office, which was announced last month.  Under the plan there are
five vice provost positions.  Previously there were three vice
provosts and three associate provosts.

     Approved Friday were the vice provost for academic program
support; vice provost for academic policy, personnel and
administration; and vice provost for academic program evaluation
and coordination.  No salary increases beyond normal merit
increases are included.

     Other administrative changes in the Office of Academic
Affairs were approved.  They included discontinuing the Office of
International Affairs and the position of vice provost for
international affairs.  The Office of International Education and
area studies centers now will report to other vice provosts.

     The trustees authorized changing the Bylaws of the Board of
Trustees and to the Rules of the University Faculty to reflect
the new positions, changes in titles, and changes in
administrative structures.
