Calendar of Upcoming Events - 04/01/94

NOTE TO REPORTERS AND EDITORS:  Spring is the busiest time of the
year at Ohio State, with a calendar full of special programs,
awards, and events.  To help you keep track of what's happening
when, the Office of University Communications will distribute a
weekly list of upcoming events.  The person listed at the end of
each entry will have the most direct information about the event.

April 7-11
*NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt on display at the Ohio Union
Ballrooms, 1739 N. High St.  Opening ceremony is 7 to 10 p.m.,
Thursday, April 7.  Display hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on April
8, 9, 10; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 11.  Sponsored by the
Student Events Committee and the Buckeye Advocates for Student

April 7
*Student for a Day reception, 5 to 6:30 p.m., Bricker Hall, 190
N. Oval Mall.  Twenty students will meet with the trustees and
administrators who will be "shadowing" them for a day later in

*Board of Trustees and its committees meet at the Fawcett Center

Poetry Reading -- Jim Barnes, professor at Northeast Missouri
State University and winner of an NEA arts fellowship, will read

April 13
Faculty Lecture by Mary Beckman, professor of linguistics, on
"Charting the Rhythms and Melodies of Speech.  7:30 p.m., Faculty

Lecture -- "The Heraion at Argos: Results of Recent Work" by
Chris Pfaff, Department of History of Art.  Professor Pfaff will
present results of his architectural survey and analysis of
earlier excavation at the classical temple.  8 p.m., 170 Math

April 16
Television Program -- "Beneath the Surface," 7 p.m., WCMH-TV
(Channel 4).  This program, a joint effort of WCMH 4 and Ohio
State, will take a look at violence and its effects on youth in
central Ohio.  Hosts are Reggie Anglen of University
Communications and Kelly Jackson and Jim Scott of WCMH.
Interviews with young people who have committed or witnessed
violent crimes and with Judge Yvette McGee-Brown, Urban League

April 18
Lecture -- Thomas E. Lovejoy of the Smithsonian Institution, a
world renowned conservation biologist, will speak on the
importance of biodiversity at 8 p.m. in the Ohio Union Conference
Theatre, 1739 N. High St.  Doors open at 7:30 p.m.; first come,
first seated.  Sponsored by the seven class honoraries at Ohio

April 18-19
*39th annual Ohio Pharmaceutical Seminar -- "Managed Competition
and Pharmaceutical Care: A Challenge for the Profession."  At the
Marriott North, 6500 Doubletree Ave.  Members of the news media
are welcome at all sessions; others must register and pay fees to
attend the sessions.  Alan Escovitz, director of pharmacy

April 20
Faculty Author Series presents William Allen of the Department of
English, 7:30 p.m. at the Little Professor bookstore in the
Worthington Mall.  Allen will discuss his book Walking Distance:
An Ohio Odyssey, an exploration of the layers of meaning of a

April 23
*State Science Olympiad, 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at various campus
locations.  Headquarters are in the Ohio Union, Buckeye Suites A-
G (third floor).  About 1,200 students in grades 6 to 12,
representing 40 junior high schools and 40 senior schools from
around the state will compete in fun science events.  Sondra Kay

April 24
College of Optometry Career Day, 1-4 p.m., College of Optometry,
352 W. 10th Ave.  Prospective students and others are invited to
tour the college's clinics, laboratories and classrooms; talk
informally with faculty and students; and obtain information on
