Campus hearing to focus on performance funding

Members of the Ohio House Finance Committee’s Subcommittee on Higher Education will hold a hearing at the Grand Lounge of the Longaberger Alumni House from 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Aug. 1, as part of a study they are doing on the way the state share of instruction is distributed and the overall effectiveness of performance funding.

Speakers will include Ohio State Interim President Edward H. Jennings, who will offer a broad overview; Executive Vice President and Provost Ed Ray, who will discuss the university’s Academic Plan; and Bill Shkurti, who will discuss how the university factors academic excellence into the distribution of subsidy money. In addition, a panel consisting of Fred Sanfilippo, senior vice president for health sciences and dean of the College of Medicine and Public Health; Joe Alutto, dean of the Fisher College of Business; and Michael Hogan, dean of the College of Humanities will discuss the need to increase and maintain academic quality in a time of tight budgets, while Undergraduate Student Government President Eddie Pauline will discuss student issues.

Subcommittee members include Jim Hughes, R-Columbus, chairman; Jean Schmidt, R-Loveland, vice chair; Mary Rose Oakar, D-Cleveland; Theresa Fedor, D-Toledo; Jim Trakas, R-Independence; and Ann Womer Benjamin, R-Aurora.
