Campus Traffic and Construction Update - 04/02/04

Over the next few months, the campus area will undergo unprecedented construction, with some traffic patterns, walkways, and parking areas temporarily altered in the name of progress. Motorists and pedestrians should plan for extra time, or an alternate route around these locations:

• 12th Avenue restricted to one-way. Eastbound between the Cannon Drive and Neil Avenue until mid-June. Westbound lane from the garage to Cannon Drive will remain open until mid-April, allowing allowing garage traffic to move more smoothly toward Cannon Drive.

Use 9th Avenue or King Avenue as a westbound alternative. Crane to be located in the north curb lane all week, restricting traffic flow; sidewalks remain open, but caution should be used. 12th Avenue remains two-way east of Neil.

12th Avenue is being widened to accommodate the anticipated traffic from State Route 315 ramps that will open this summer. A new traffic signal to be installed at the corner of Neil and 12th Avenue will help reduce congestion at this intersection.

New Exit from North Cannon Garage Started. Work on a second exit onto Upham Drive has begun. During the construction, parking spaces on the first floor, adjacent to the new exit, will be blocked off.

• Cannon Drive restricted. Two lanes closed, but traffic maintained. East sidewalk closed; pedestrians use caution. Scheduled completion date: early April. This is to prepare for the new Biomedical Research Tower.

• 9th Avenue restricted. Reduced to one lane each direction; west entrance to 9th Avenue Garage closed; use entrance on north side. This is to realign 9th Avenue and create a Central Plaza as finishing touches to the Richard H. Ross Heart Hospital and Hospitals Parking Garage.

• 19th Avenue closed. Steam line work continues; street closed to through traffic; access to west side of 19th available via 17th/Neil. Closure due to steam tunnel renovations and construction of Physics Research Building.
