    CARTOON, GRAPHIC, AND PHOTOGRAPHIC ARTS RESEARCH LIBRARY

     The Cartoon, Graphic, and Photographic Arts Research Library
is the  world's largest  academic repository of cartoon art.  The
library at  The Ohio  State University contains more than 200,000
original works by more than 1,000 artists.

     Major collections and papers include those of Milton Caniff,
creator of  "Steve Canyon"  and "Terry and the Pirates," and Walt
Kelly, creator  of "Pogo"; the Robert Roy Metz Collection of more
than 83,000  original cartoons  by 113  artists; the Woody Gelman
Collection  of   Winsor  McCay  cartoons;  and  the  Will  Eisner
Collection.

     In addition,  the archives  of the  American Association  of
Editorial Cartoonists and the National Cartoonists Society are in
the library  along with more than 100,000 film posters and stills
and various collections of historic photographs.

     Every three years, the library hosts the Festival of Cartoon
Art, featuring  presentations by  several of  the world's leading
cartoonists.

     Current research  activities include  studies  of  editorial
cartooning  and   censorship  during  World  War  I  and  of  the
effectiveness of  editorial cartoons  about  the  environment  in
raising public  consciousness, and  dissertation  work  on  comic
strip theatricals from "The Yellow Kid" to "Annie," et.al.

     The curator, Lucy Shelton Caswell, is an associate professor
in University  Libraries  and  journalism  who  edits  INKS,  the
journal of cartoon and comic art studies.
