Charity, school spirit focus of Beat Michigan Week 2002
COLUMBUS – On or off the field, the competition between The Ohio State University and the University of Michigan is fierce. This year’s activities are marked by charitable events, fund-raising efforts, and free food and concert after Saturday’s (11/23) game.
The week kicks off with the Beat Michigan 5K at 1 p.m. Sunday (11/17). Proceeds from the race will be donated to the Neighborhood Services, Inc., a local charity organization.
Then, an annual Blood Battle between Ohio State and the University of Michigan will begin on Monday and will last throughout the week. The university that donates the most blood to the American Red Cross will be recognized during Saturday’s football game.
The blood drive will take place in many locations across campus and is one of many charitable events occurring from Sunday (11/17) through Sunday (11/24).
“Beat Michigan Week is a great way to step out there and give back to a city that has given the university so much,” said Shawn Collier, undergraduate chair. “This is a wonderful opportunity for students to get involved and enjoy themselves in a safe environment.”
After the football game, free food will be available for students at E. 12th Avenue, E. 15th Avenue, Lane Avenue and the Ohio Union. In addition, the Pat McGee Band will perform a free concert for Ohio State students Saturday night at the Newport Music Hall, 1722 N High St.
“This will be a night of free, good music,” said Jim Allison, chairman of the concert committee for the Ohio Union Activities Board. “Students can have fun in an atmosphere that is safe for them.”
Beat Michigan Week will continue even after the football game with the Project Pride Campus Clean-Up at 2 p.m. on Sunday (11/24). Students who participate will receive cleaning supplies and assignments upon arrival at the designated meeting place.
Events include:
Sunday (11/17)
• Beat Michigan 5K, registration begins at noon on the south side of the Ohio Stadium and the race begins at 1 p.m. Ohio State students and Buckeye fans will follow a designated course through campus. All proceeds will be donated to Neighborhood Services, Inc., a local charity organization.
• The Ohio State University Marching Band in Concert, 3 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Auditorium, 300 W. Broad Street. Tickets can be purchased for $12 to $14 and students will receive a $1 discount. For ticket information, call (614) 292-3535.
Monday (11/18)
• Blood Battle Drive, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Ohio Union Main Lounge, 1739 N. High St. Ohio State will compete with the university up north in one of the oldest Beat Michigan Week traditions. Approximately 16 blood drives will take place throughout the week at various locations across campus. To make an appointment, participants can call 1-800-GIVELIFE or register on-site at any of the many locations.
• Good Luck Bucks Banner Signing, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Ohio Union west lawn. Students, faculty and staff can write messages to the Ohio State football team. The banner will hang in the practice facility prior to the football game.
• Spielman on Sports at Woody’s, noon at Woody’s Place in the Ohio Union. Chris Spielman will broadcast his radio show live on WBNS 1460 AM (The Fan).
Thursday (11/21)
• Mitten Project Sew-a-Thon, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Ohio Union. Members of the Ohio State community will sew polar-fleece mittens to be donated to homeless shelters. All materials will be provided.
• Wing the Wolverines, 7 to 9 p.m. at the Ohio Union Ballrooms. Treat yourself to free chicken wings in attempt to name the “Favorite Wings of OSU Students.” This 4th annual event offers more than 15,000 wings from various area restaurants. After tasting the wings, students can vote on their favorite.
Saturday (11/23)
• The Buckeye Spirit Tunnel, 10 a.m. at the Ohio Stadium. Football fans are invited to become part of a human tunnel of Buckeye spirit. Fans will line a path from St. John Arena to the Ohio Stadium for the football team to pass through on their way to the stadium.
• Pat McGee Band at the Newport, 9 p.m. at the Newport Music Hall, 1722 N. High St. Free tickets are available at the Newport Music Hall. There is a limit of two tickets per student Buck I.D. Local artists Fate Hates Us and Gravy will open the show. Doors open at 8 p.m.
Sunday (11/24)
• Project Pride Campus Clean-Up, 2 p.m. at 15th Avenue and High St. Various student organizations will take part in a campus-wide clean-up following the football festivities. Cleaning supplies and assignments will be distributed upon arrival.
