Children’s mental health expert to speak

COLUMBUS –Dr. Larke Nahme Huang, director of research at the Center for Child and Human Development at Georgetown University Medical Center, senior policy associate at the National Technical Assistance Center for Children’s Mental Health and co-chair of the Committee on Children and Families for the President’s “New Freedom” Commission on Mental Health, will speak at The Ohio State University.

The event is set from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday (5/7) at the Fawcett Center, 2400 Olentangy River Rd.

Huang has worked in the field of mental health for more than 20 years with a primary focus on mental health services for children and families and underserved, culturally diverse populations, and research and evaluation of mental health and education services for youth. She is co-author of two recent books, “Children of Color: Psychological Interventions with Culturally Diverse Youth” (2003) and “Using Evaluation Data to Manage, Improve, Market and Sustain Children’s Services” (2000) and a recent evaluation newsletter, “Data Matters: To Be or Not To Be…Evidence-Based” (2003).

Currently, Huang provides technical assistance to states and communities on services evaluation and cultural competence in child-serving systems. She is coordinating a center initiative on evidence-based practice, research projects on improving access to pediatric rehabilitation services for children with disabilities and special health care needs and development of strategies to address maternal depression in low-income urban families. She is a member of the Mental Health Task Force of the Carter Center, the American Psychological Association’s Children, Youth and Families Committee, the Advisory Committee of the APA Minority Fellowship Program, and is a founding board member of the National Asian American Pacific Islander Mental Health Association.

Huang received her doctorate in Clinical/Community Psychology from Yale University and is a licensed clinical psychologist.
