Civil rights lawyer, activist to speak as a part of diversity lecture series

Morris Dees, the co-founder and chief trial counsel for the Southern Poverty Law Center, will be the featured speaker at this week’s President’s and Provost’s Diversity Lecture Series.

Dees is a civil rights lawyer and activist who will speak at 7:30 p.m. Thursday (10/24) in the Ohio Union Ballrooms, 1739 N. High St. The title of his talk is “And Justice for All.”

For security reasons, attendees will be required to pass through metal detectors and should bring only necessities to the lecture. Large bags could hold up security and are discouraged.

Dees’ autobiography, “A Season for Justice,” was published in 1991. His second book, “Hate on Trial: The Case Against America’s Most Dangerous Neo-Nazi,” chronicles the trial and the $12.5 million judgment against white supremacist Tom Metzger and his White Aryan Resistance Group for their responsibility in the beating death by Skinheads of a young black student in Portland, Ore. Dees’ latest book, “Gathering Storm: America’s Militia Threat,” exposes the danger posed by today’s domestic terrorist groups.
