Civil war, slavery focus of next Bicentennial Lecture

Eric Foner, professor of history at Columbia University, will discuss “Prologue to War: Slavery, Social Conflict and the Civil War” at 3:30 p.m. today (4/14) in Sullivant Hall, 1813 N. High St. The event is part of the “Ohio and the World” Bicentennial Distinguished Lecture Series.

Foner specializes in the Civil War, slavery and 19th century America. He is the author of the award-winning book Reconstruction: America’s Unfinished Revolution, 1863-1877, which won the Los Angeles Times Book Award for history. Foner also wrote Who Owns History?: Rethinking the Past in a Changing World and Nothing But Freedom: Emancipation and Its Legacy. He was honored by the Society of Columbia Graduates with the Great Teacher Award and served as president of the Organization of American Historians.

The lecture series features scholars and experts who will discuss different themes related to Ohio’s continuing development. The lectures will take place in all regions of Ohio, including Toledo, Dayton, Cleveland and Athens.
