College of Veterinary Medicine dean named

COLUMBUS -- President Karen A. Holbrook and Executive Vice President and Provost Barbara R. Snyder announced today (3/31) that they have recommended to The Ohio State University’s Board of Trustees the appointment of Thomas J. Rosol, currently Ohio State’s senior associate vice president for research, as the dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine. Subject to approval by the Board of Trustees, his appointment is effective on July 1, 2005.

Rosol is highly regarded as an outstanding scholar in veterinary pathobiology whose interdisciplinary work crosses several departments and colleges. His work emphasizes both basic and translational cancer research in animals, which benefits veterinary and human medicine.

“Professor Rosol is an experienced academic administrator and will be an effective leader for the college. He is strongly committed to the University’s Academic Plan and to moving forward with the College of Veterinary Medicine’s strategic plan,” Holbrook said.

Rosol joined Ohio State’s faculty in 1986 and has taught in the College of Medicine and Public Health, the College of Dentistry, and in the College of Veterinary Medicine, where he received the Dean’s Teaching Excellence Award for Graduate Education in the College of Veterinary Medicine. He has written several book chapters and has been widely published in peer-reviewed clinical and research manuscripts.

In the Office of Research, he gained broad, university-wide administrative experience addressing diverse issues such as cross-college interdisciplinary research, cost savings and impacts on laboratory animals, technology transfer, and the education of principal investigators. He served as interim vice president for research from 2003 to 2004.

“Professor Rosol’s demonstrated excellence in teaching, research and administration will be an outstanding asset to the college. I’m looking forward to working with him in his new role,” Snyder said.

He is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Rosol has served on the editorial board and as associate editor of Veterinary Pathology and as an ad hoc reviewer for numerous journals and publications, and he has served on numbers of national and university committees. He has received several prestigious national awards, including honors from the National Institutes of Health. In addition, he received a research award for high quality publications in molecular carcinogenesis and chemoprevention from Ohio State’s Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Rosol earned a bachelor’s degree in veterinary medicine and a bachelor’s degree in animal science, both with highest honors, from the University of Illinois, where he also earned a doctor of veterinary medicine, graduating first in his class. He earned a Ph. D. in experimental pathology at Ohio State. Prior to entering academia, he worked as a veterinarian in a mixed animal practice in southwest Wisconsin.
