Columbus Symphony Orchestra to present free concert on South Oval

COLUMBUS – The best academically prepared freshman class can join others in The Ohio State University community on the eve of the first day of classes for a free Columbus Symphony Orchestra concert.

The “Picnic with the Buckeyes” event, sponsored by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and First Year Experience (UAFYE), is set for 6 p.m. on Tuesday (9/21) on the South Oval. It is open to students, faculty, staff, family and friends.

Those attending will hear the soothing sounds of wind, string and percussion instruments and will have the chance to celebrate their new lives at Ohio State with university favorites like “Across the Field” and “Hang on Sloopy.”

Mabel Freeman, assistant vice president for UAFYE, said the goal is to broaden the horizons of first-year and transfer students, and show them one of the cultural opportunities available to them as they join the Ohio State and Columbus communities.

“We want our students to know that they are entering an Ohio State community that can come together and enjoy the same things,” Freeman said. “The concert also is an immediate and very visual reminder that our community extends beyond the boundaries of campus.”

In the event of rain or cold weather, the concert will be rescheduled for Feb. 22, 2005, in Mershon Auditorium, 1871 North High St.
