Columbus Young Scholars Induction+Graduation

   COLUMBUS YOUNG SCHOLARS TO HONOR NEW AND GRADUATING MEMBERS

     The Columbus Young Scholars Program of The Ohio State
University will celebrate a milestone on Wednesday, May 4, when
it honors its first class of college-bound graduating seniors.
These 16 students from 10 Columbus public high schools will pass
the torch to the incoming class of 20 sixth grade Young Scholars
during a ceremony beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Martin Luther
King Jr. Center for the Performing Arts, 867 Mount Vernon Ave.

     Ohio State President E. Gordon Gee and Columbus Public
Schools Supt. Larry Mixon will both address the Scholars.  Other
remarks will be given by Cameron Mason, senior class member;
LeRoy Pernell, director of the Young Scholars Program; and
others.  A reception will follow.

     The Young Scholars Program provides year-round academic,
personal and skill development opportunities for economically
disadvantaged minority youth.  Its main objective is to increase
the number of students from underrepresented minority groups who
enroll and succeed in colleges and universities.  After this
year's new class is inducted, there will be approximately 1,450
Scholars participating from nine major Ohio cities: Akron,
Canton, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Lorain, Toledo
and Youngstown.  The first class of Young Scholars, inducted as
sixth graders in the spring of 1988, will be entering Ohio State
or other colleges this fall.  Young Scholars are guaranteed
admission to Ohio State, along with financial aid, if they
successfully complete the program through high school graduation
with a B average or better in a college preparatory curriculum.
They come to the Columbus campus for two-week institutes each
summer and take part in a variety of academic support activities
in their hometowns throughout the year.  There also are programs
provided for their parents.
