Conference examines rebuilding Columbus schools

Ohio State University’s P-12 Project is partnering with Columbus Public Schools and the Columbus Education Association for Rebuilding Education, a conference focusing on the rebuilding of Columbus schools.

The conference will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday (5/1) at the Hyatt on Capitol Square.

Workshops, which will take place from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., will include research-based information on a variety of topics, including “Historic Landmark Schools and New Facilities,” “Models for School Redesign and their Effects on Urban Student Achievement,” “Meeting the Needs of Special Children (Gifted, ESL, Spec. Ed.),” “Needs of the Urban Child; Schools as Community Centers,” and “Accountability.”

Since media will play a crucial role in communicating information about the district’s plans to improve school facilities, organizers are hoping that news organizations can both join and report on the conference. Since many of the workshops occur simultaneously, news organizations should consider dedicating more than one reporter to this story.

A noon luncheon will feature Gene Harris, superintendent of Columbus Public Schools; John Grossman, president of the Columbus Education Association; and Daryl Siedentop, professor of education and director of Ohio State University’s P-12 Project.
