Conference on Math + Science Education

OSU CONFERENCE TO ADDRESS MATH/SCIENCE EDUCATION REFORM

     COLUMBUS -- More than 300 teachers, researchers and
administrators will converge at The Ohio State University next
week to discuss the latest advances and challenges facing
mathematics and science education reform.

     The national conference, "Connecting Resources for Reform,"
will be held Tuesday (11/30) through Friday (12/3) at the Drake
Union, 1849 Cannon Drive.  The meeting is open to the public.

     The conference will begin with two panels focusing on the
impact of federal and state educational policy on reform of math
and science education.  Both panels will be held in the Stadium
II Theatre at the Drake Union.

     The first panel, set for 10 a.m. Tuesday (11/30), addresses
federal policy and will feature U.S. Rep. Tom Sawyer, D-Ohio;
Mary Lindquist, president of the National Council of Teachers of
Mathematics; Wendell Mohling, retiring president of the National
Science Teachers Association; and Ken Wilson, Nobel laureate and
professor of physics at Ohio State.

     The second panel, beginning at 2 p.m. and aimed at state
policy impacts on reform, features state Sen. Eugene Watts,
author of Ohio's law on assessment testing; Ted Sanders, state
superintendent of schools; Marilyn Cross, president of the Ohio
Education Association; and Tom Sachse, director of science and
environmental education for the California Department of
Education.

     The keynote address of the conference, "Bridging the Gap
Between Research and Practice in Mathematics and Science
Education," will be given Wednesday (12/1) afternoon by Alphonse
Buccino, dean of the College of Education at the University of
Georgia and former education advisor to the White House's Office
of Science and Technology.

     The conference is sponsored by the National Center for
Science Teaching and Learning; the Eisenhower National
Clearinghouse for Mathematics and Science Education; the
Educational Resources Information Clearinghouse for Science,
Mathematics, and Environmental Education; the Ohio
Mathematics/Science Project Discovery; BP Oil, and the Battelle
Memorial Institute.
