MEMORIAL FOR DIPLOMAT KILLED IN BOSNIA IS SUNDAY

     COLUMBUS -- The Ohio State University will honor faculty 
member Joseph Kruzel with a memorial service SUNDAY (10/1) at 
1:30 p.m. in St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 30 W. Woodruff Ave.

     Kruzel was on leave from his position of director of the 
Mershon Center's Program on International Security and Military 
Affairs when he died Aug. 19 in Bosnia while on a peace mission. 
He was one of three U.S. diplomats killed in an accident on a 
muddy road near Sarajevo.

     U.S. Secretary of Defense William Perry and Ohio State 
officials will eulogize Kruzel at the service.  Because of time 
constraints, Perry will not be available for interviews.

     As assistant deputy secretary of defense for European and 
NATO affairs, Kruzel helped draw up a plan to end the Bosnian 
war. At a memorial service in August, President Clinton eulogized 
the three diplomats' efforts toward peace.

     Kruzel is survived by his wife, Gail Kruzel, and their 
children, Sarah and John.  The family lives in McLean, Virginia.

MEDIA GUIDELINES

     The Kruzel family has requested that the media not use 
television lights or photo flashes during the service.  It is 
requested that auto film advance motors not be used.  Still 
photographers and videographers will be able to set up at the 
back of the church.

     A mult box will be available for audio.

     Reporters will be seated in a reserved section.  Please 
identify yourselves to the ushers.  It is the family's request 
that once seated, no one leave until the service is concluded.

     Following the service, three of Kruzel's colleagues will be 
available for interviews. They are: Charles Hermann, former 
director of the Mershon Center and now director of the George 
Bush School of Government at Texas A&M; Paul Beck, chairperson of 
the Department of Political Science at Ohio State; and James 
Harf, professor emeritus of political science at Ohio State.

     Reporters who wish to interview Hermann, Beck or Harf can 
talk with them in St. Stephen's after the ceremony.  Because of 
time constraints, Secretary of Defense William Perry will not be 
available for interview.
