Daryl Siedentop Nominated As Interim Education Dean

PROVOST RECOMMENDS INTERIM DEAN FOR COLLEGE OF EDUCATION

COLUMBUS -- Daryl Siedentop, the senior associate dean of 
The Ohio State University's College of Education, has been 
nominated for appointment as interim dean of the college. 

 The appointment, announced Thursday (6/4) by Acting Senior 
Vice President and Provost Edward J. Ray, is subject to Board of 
Trustees approval.  It will be effective July 1 through June 30, 
1999. 
 
Siedentop will replace Nancy Zimpher, who becomes chancellor 
of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Aug. 1.  His salary 
will be $143,820. 
 
Siedentop, 59, of WESTERVILLE, has been senior associate 
dean since 1995 and professor of sport and exercise sciences 
since 1976.  He is one of the world's leading authorities on 
sport education for children and youth, and is its most 
influential scholar in the analysis of teaching effectiveness in 
physical activity settings.  In recognition of his achievements, 
Siedentop was made a Fellow of the American Academy of 
Kinesiology and Physical Education. 

"Dr. Siedentop is highly regarded for his outstanding 
leadership of and service to the College of Education during the 
past several years," Ray said.  "He has an excellent reputation, 
as well as an in-depth understanding of the college and its many 
constituencies.  We are looking forward to working with him in 
this expanded role." 

Among his many honors, Siedentop has received Distinguished 
Alumni awards from Hope College in Holland, Mich., and Indiana 
University.  He is this year's recipient of the C.H. McCloy Honor 
Award from the Research Consortium of the American Alliance of 
Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, which also 
named him an Alliance Scholar in 1995. 

He was awarded the quadrennial Juan Antonio Samaranch Prize 
at the Olympic Scientific Congress in 1984 and the National 
Association for Sport and Physical Education Curriculum and 
Instruction Academy Honor Award in 1994. 

Several of Siedentop's 11 books have been translated into 
Japanese, Korean and French.  He has published more than 100 
articles in professional and scholarly journals.  He has held 
visiting faculty positions at the universities of Massachusetts 
and Georgia, the Instituto Nacionale d'Education Fisica in 
Granada, Spain, and Edith Cowan University in Perth, Western 
Australia. 
 
"The faculty, staff and students of the College of Education 
charted a course for the future during the recent restructuring 
initiative at Ohio State," Siedentop said.  "It is my intention 
to facilitate continued progress toward that future and to help 
the college ready its programs and budget for our permanent 
dean."

Siedentop joined the College of Education faculty in 1970 
after 10 years at Hope College, where he received a Bachelor of 
Arts in economics.  He received a Master of Arts degree in 
education from Western Michigan University and a P.E.D. from 
Indiana University in physical education. 

Siedentop's wife, Roberta Holloway Siedentop, is a physical 
education specialist who coordinates physical education for the 
Bexley School District.
