Disability Awareness Week to feature challenges

                         NEWS ADVISORY:
         DISABILITY AWARENESS WEEK TO FEATURE CHALLENGES

     E. Gordon Gee, president of The Ohio State University, has
accepted a challenge from Students for Disability Awareness to
attend a class as a "blind" student on Monday, May 9.  The
simulation will kick off a series of activities for Disability
Awareness Week.

     Maurice Madry, president of SDA, will meet Gee in Bricker
Hall, 190 N. Oval Mall, shortly after 8 a.m.  Gee will have his
eyes covered and will use a cane to walk with Madry across the
Oval to Madry's business law class in 100 Hagerty Hall, 1775
College Road.  John D. Blackburn, associate professor of finance,
is teaching the class, which begins at 8:30 a.m.  The day's topic
will be the impact on business of the Americans with Disabilities
Act.

     Other events of the week include:

     -- Tuesday, May 10, President Gee presents awards of
appreciation to volunteers from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in the Office for
Disability Services, 150 Pomerene Hall.

     -- Wednesday, May 11, wheel-a-thon on the Oval permits
students and others to try using a wheelchair from 10 to 11:30
a.m. and 1 to 2 p.m.  Wheelchair teams compete from 11:30 a.m. to
1 p.m. on the Oval to raise money for adaptive equipment for the
university's recreation program.  University Police also will
have a bicycle fair on the Oval.  Hands Across the Oval at 1:15
p.m. encourages everyone to show support for students with
disabilities.  Students for Disability Awareness sponsors a panel
discussion from 6 to 7 p.m. in Buckeye Suites A, B and C of the
Ohio Union, 1739 N. High St.
