Distinguished Teaching Rewards at OSU are Better

     Rewards for distinguished teaching at The Ohio State
University just got better.

     The Ohio State University Alumni Association, Inc.'s support
for the annual Alumni Distinguished Teaching Award prizes will be
doubled in 1995 and the number of awards will be increased.  The
Association's Board of Directors approved an increase in the
dollar amount of each award from $1,500 to $3,000 and the number
of awards from eight to 10.

     "Alumni feel it is vitally important to continue to
spotlight and encourage quality teaching," explained Thomas C.
Sawyer, chair of the Alumni Association's Board of Directors and
executive vice president of Paul Werth Associates in Columbus.
"We expect this to be the first of many initiatives in the coming
years," he said.

     "The Alumni Association is to be commended for its steadfast
commitment to recognizing and rewarding teaching, and I am
delighted with the generous decision to increase support for this
prestigious award," said Richard Sisson, senior vice president
for academic affairs and provost, who announced the increase at
the university's Board of Trustees meeting Oct. 7.  Jane Fraser,
associate professor industrial, welding, and systems engineering
and chair of the Executive Committee of the university's Academy
of Teaching, said that "Ohio State alumni and their Association
are strong voices for excellence in teaching here.  This increase
is another wonderful example showing that the alumni act on their
beliefs."

     The Alumni Awards for Distinguished Teaching were
established jointly by the Association and the Development Fund
in 1960.  The purpose of the award is to recognize and give
evidence of the importance placed on superior teaching at the
university and to provide encouragement and incentive for
teaching achievement.

     Recipients are nominated by their students and colleagues
and are chosen by a committee of alumni, students, and previous
award winners.

     With the recent action of the Alumni Association board,
recipients will receive a cash award of $3 000 and an increase of
$1,200 in their base pay.  Recipients also become members of Ohio
State's Academy of Teaching, an organization composed solely of
Distinguished Teaching Award winners.

     The Ohio State University Alumni Association, Inc., was
founded in 1911.  With more than 110,000 members, is the third
largest dues-supported alumni association in the world.
