Duncan to Step Down as VP for Legal Affairs

ROBERT DUNCAN TO STEP DOWN AS VICE PRESIDENT FOR LEGAL AFFAIRS

     COLUMBUS -- Robert M. Duncan, who has been vice president
for legal affairs and general counsel at The Ohio State
University since December 1991, has announced his intention to
relinquish the position effective Jan. 1, 1995.  Duncan will
retain his second appointment as secretary of the university's
Board of Trustees and will be named a special counselor to the
president, said John W. Kessler, chairman of the Board of
Trustees.

     "We have all been fortunate to be able to work with Judge
Duncan," Kessler said.  "And we certainly look forward to
continuing our mutual efforts on behalf of the university."

     Duncan, 67, a former U.S. District judge, said that he is
reducing his responsibilities in order to spend more time with
his family and on his many volunteer activities.

     President E. Gordon Gee said: "Bob Duncan has done an
exemplary job as vice president for legal affairs, and we will
miss him very much in that position.  However, I do understand
and support his wishes to reduce his immense Ohio State workload
at this time in his life, and I am most grateful that he has
agreed to continue serving the university as secretary to the
Board of Trustees and as a valued counselor to me."

     As vice president and general counsel, Duncan heads the
Office of Legal Affairs and is responsible for the coordination
and supervision of all legal matters at the university.  He and
his staff work closely with the Office of the Attorney General of
Ohio concerning legal representation of the university.

     For six years before joining President Gee's staff in 1991,
he was a partner in the Columbus law firm Jones, Day, Reavis &
Pogue.  From 1974 to 1985, Duncan was judge of the U.S. District
Court for the Southern District of Ohio.  Prior to that, he had
been chief judge of the U.S. Court of Military Appeals, a justice
of the Ohio Supreme Court, a judge of the Franklin County
Municipal Court, chief counsel to the attorney general of Ohio,
chief of the Workmen's Compensation Section of the Ohio attorney
general's office, and an assistant attorney general for both the
city of Columbus and the state.

     A two-time graduate of Ohio State, Duncan earned his
bachelor's degree in 1948 and his law degree in 1952.  He has
been honored many times for his achievements, receiving honorary
Doctor of Laws degrees from Ohio State, Capital Law School,
Central State, Wilberforce and Ohio Northern universities; the
1990 Columbus Award of the Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce; and
numerous awards related to civil rights.

     Within the next few days, Gee will appoint a committee to
conduct a search for Duncan's successor.
