Experts to discuss war with Iraq, rebuilding nation

Adeed Dawisha, professor of government and politics, and Karen Dawisha, professor of political science and director of the Havighurst Center for Russian and Post Soviet Studies, from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, will discuss the war with Iraq and rebuilding the nation at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday (4/16) in the Moritz College of Law, 55 W. 12th Ave. Richard Herrmann, professor of political science and director of the Mershon Center, will moderate the event.

Adeed Dawisha, who is an Iraqi-born scholar of the Middle East, will discuss “Why the War with Iraq is Just.” He is frequently invited to Washington, D.C., to participate in discussions at the Pentagon and the CIA regarding the role of the United States in a post-Saddam Iraq. He also is the author of several books, including “Arab Nationalism in the 20th Century: From Triumph to Despair” and “Beyond Coercion: The Durability of the Arab State.”

Karen Dawisha will discuss “Blueprint for a Democratic Iraq.” Her most recent publications include “New States of Eurasia: The Politics of Upheaval” and “Eastern Europe, Gorbachev and Reform: The Great Challenge.” She also co-edited a four-volume series about Authoritarian and Democratization in Post-communist Societies.

The event is sponsored by the university’s Mershon Center, which promotes the interdisciplinary study of international security and public policy, and the Moritz College of Law.
