Visiting Fellow, CCAPP, Astrophysicist
As an astrophysicist, Paul Sutter received his PhD in Physics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2011. After spending three years at the Paris Institute of Astrophysics, he now splits his time between a research fellowship in Trieste, Italy, and a visiting scholar position at the Ohio State University's Center for Cosmology and Astro-Particle Physics. His research focuses on many diverse topics, from the emptiest regions of the universe, to the earliest moments of the Big Bang, to the data analysis challenges of detecting the formation of the first stars. He is a member of several collaborations, including HERA, which is currently building a new radio telescope array in the Karoo Desert of South Africa.
As an "Agent to the Stars", Paul has passionately engaged the public in science outreach for several years. He is the host of the "Ask a Spaceman!" podcast, where he answers space questions posted on social media, as well as the new series "Realspace", where Paul interviews fellow young physicists and science communicators about their lives, interests, and passions in order to break down misconceptions about scientists. With Wayne Schlingman he hosts “Space in Your Face”, a Youtube series presenting the latest astronomy news in only two minutes or less.
Paul is frequently quoted in newspapers, regularly appears on TV and radio, and is starring in a new Youtube series currently in production with National Geographic.
