Five from Ohio State honored as military veterans

FIVE WITH OHIO STATE TIES JOIN OHIO VETERANS HALL OF FAME

     COLUMBUS -- Four graduates of The Ohio State University and
a former faculty member were among 25 outstanding men and women
who were inducted Tuesday (11/1) into the Ohio Veterans Hall of
Fame.

     Gov. George Voinovich presided at the ceremony in Franklin
County Veterans Memorial attended by representatives of veterans
groups from across Ohio.

     The Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame is sponsored by the Ohio
Bureau of Employment Services to recognize veterans for their
"significant contribution at local, state or national level in
their selected field or profession ... and for their voluntary
work for veterans and the community."

     The five with Ohio State ties who were inducted are:

     -- Wayne W. "Woody" Hayes, head football coach from 1951 to
1978, who died in 1987.  He was a Navy veteran of World War II;
he made four trips to Vietnam to visit the troops; and maintained
an interest in military and veterans affairs throughout his life.

     -- Raymond E. Mason Jr., chairman of Columbus Truck and
Equipment Co. and a retired major general in the U.S. Army.  He
earned his bachelor's degree in business from Ohio State in 1941.
He is a veteran of World War II.  He has supported Ohio State
through the years, and in 1985 he established the Raymond E.
Mason Designated Professorship in Transportation and Logistics in
honor of his father.

     -- Ronald M. Sega, NASA astronaut with a rank of lieutenant
colonel in the Air Force Reserve.  He graduated from the U.S. Air
Force Academy in 1974 and earned a master's degree in physics
from Ohio State in 1975.  He later earned a Ph.D. in electrical
engineering from the Air Force Academy.  He currently is on an
extended leave of absence from his position as professor of
electrical and computer engineering at the University of
Colorado.  He was a mission specialist on the first joint U.S.-
Russian Space Shuttle mission last February.  He has logged 199
hours in space.

     -- Nancy J. Sherlock, NASA astronaut and major in the U.S.
Army.  She earned a bachelor's degree in biological sciences from
Ohio State in 1981 and a master's degree in safety engineering
from the University of Southern California in 1985.  A senior
Army aviator, she has logged 2,800 flying hours in various rotary
wing and fixed wing aircraft.  She was a mission specialist
aboard the Orbiter Endeavor which flew for 239 hours in space in
June 1993.  She is scheduled to go into space again as a mission
specialist in mid-1995.

     -- Ronald W. Trewyn, associate vice provost for research and
professor of biology at Kansas State University.  He was a
professor of medical biochemistry at Ohio State until last August
when he took the position at Kansas State.  He also held an
appointment in Ohio State's Comprehensive Cancer Center.  A
veteran of the Vietnam War, he challenged covert discrimination
against veterans on college campuses.  He also was a member of
the Franklin County Veterans Service Commission.
