Former Coalition advisor to discuss ‘Future Security of Iraq’

Walt Slocombe, senior advisor and director for security affairs (national security and defense) in the Coalition Provisional Authority for Iraq, will discuss the “Future Security of Iraq” as the 2004 Joseph J. Kruzel Memorial Lecture of the Mershon Center at The Ohio State University.

The event is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday (4/14) in the Mershon Center, 1501 Neil Ave. Reservations are necessary for the general public.

Slocombe served as senior advisor and director for security affairs from May to November 2003. In the position, he supervised the program for creating a new Iraqi Army and for planning the new armed forces of the country, assisted in the coordination of other programs to establish new or reformed security services for Iraq, oversaw the program for paying interim stipends to former Iraqi military personnel, and advised the Iraqi interim authorities on setting up national security institutions and procedures suitable for the new Iraq. He had previously served as Under Secretary of Defense for Policy from September 1994 to January 2001.

Following his return from Iraq, he returned to his position as a partner at the Washington, D.C., law firm of Caplin & Drysdale from which he was on leave during his service.

The event is sponsored by the Mershon Center, which focuses on the interdisciplinary study of international security and public policy.
