Forum to Discuss South Campus District Plan

FORUM TO CONSIDER SOUTH CAMPUS DISTRICT PLAN

     COLUMBUS -- Residents and property owners in the 
neighborhoods south of The Ohio State University's Columbus 
campus are invited to a public forum Thursday, Jan. 30, to 
discuss a long-range plan for development of university-owned
property in that area.

     Ohio State's Office of University Architect and Physical 
Planning will sponsor the forum which will begin at 7 p.m. in the 
parlor of King Avenue United Methodist Church, 299 King Ave. at 
Neil Avenue.  Visitors should enter the building from the west 
parking lot.  The building is handicap accessible.

      The university last year completed a master plan for the 
Columbus campus which considered planning and development 
policies for the next 50 years. As a follow-up, Ohio State has 
embarked on a series of district plans which consider development 
issues in more detail for specific parts of the campus.

     The forum Jan. 30 will explain the process for development 
of a South Campus District Plan to be completed this year, as 
well as receive input from the neighborhoods.  The South Campus 
District generally includes areas within or near those 
university-owned properties south of West 12th Avenue, west of 
North High Street and east of the Olentangy River.  The southern
boundary of the district is sawtooth-shaped from West 11th Avenue 
at High Street and dropping to King Avenue at Perry Street.

     The university has employed Sasaki Associates, a nationally 
recognized planning firm, as consultants to develop the district 
plan.  Sasaki Associates also was responsible for development of 
the master plan.

     Jill Morelli, assistant vice president and university 
architect, said that the district plan will focus primarily on 
the future uses of university land, but that Ohio State 
recognizes that whatever happens on its property will affect its 
neighbors.  "We encourage residents, property owners and
University District leaders to attend the forum for an 
explanation of the district plan's scope and timetable," she 
said.  "We also want to hear, from a neighborhood perspective, 
what issues or concerns should be considered as part of this 
planning process."

     The plan also will look at traffic and parking issues as 
they affect access to the campus and will consider 
recommendations made by Campus Partners for improving the 
university's southern boundary.

     This initial forum is expected to be followed by two 
additional public forums further along in the planning process, 
probably in March and June.
