Foundation Board Elects New Members

New Members Are Named To
Ohio State Foundation Board

     The Ohio State University Foundation Board of Directors
today voted to name four new members to the Board as it prepares
for a major new fund raising drive that is scheduled to be
launched in September 1995.
     The new members, whose election must be ratified by the
University Board of Trustees, are: Loann Crane, Columbus,
president of the Fairwood Investment Company; Ray J. Groves, of
Lyndhurst, OH, retired chairman and chief executiveofficer of
Ernst & Young; Thekla Reese Shackelford, Columbus, owner of
School Selection Counseling; Barbara Trueman, Columbus, a long-
time active supporter of business, educational, and philanthropic
causes and former chair of the board at Red Roof Inns.
     In addition, John W. Kessler, chair of the University Board
of Trustees, announced the appointment of Trustee David L.
Brennan, of Akron, as an ex officio member of the Foundation
Board.
     "We are enormously pleased to welcome these highly respected
individuals to the Foundation Board," said John B. Gerlach, Sr.,
chair. "The richness of experience and diversity of background
they bring to the Board will be major assets to us as we move
into the exciting months ahead.  The Board and the University are
truly fortunate to have them with us."
     The Foundation Board was designated by The Ohio State
University Board of Trustees as the primary fund raising and gift
receipt organization of the University.
     Jerry A. May, Ohio State vice president for development and
president of the Foundation, said the new members will help the
University strengthen its program for securing private support to
Ohio State.
     "Private fund raising is an increasingly important activity
at institutions such as Ohio State," May said. "It is essential
that we build and strengthen partnerships with corporations,
foundations, and individuals in many different areas. The wisdom
and experience of our new members will complement the Board's
existing talents and position it well for the opportunities and
challenges ahead."
     Those challenges include helping to devise strategies
leading to the launch of a new university-wide fund raising
campaign. The campaign will seek funds from private sources to
support the University's academic and programmatic priorities.
      Membership on the Board is divided into three categories:
      Elected directors are volunteers who are among the
University's chief supporters and advocates.
      Ex officio directors serve as a consequence of their
positions elsewhere in the University,
      and non-voting members hold executive positions
within the University.
      Crane, Groves, Shackelford, and Trueman will serve as
elected directors.
     Loann Crane, president of the Fairwood Investment Company,
is a long-time supporter of the Columbus community. She is a
trustee for the Columbus College of Art and Design, the Greater
Columbus Arts Council, the Columbus Museum of Art, and Dialogue
Magazine. She serves on the Humanities Development Council.  She
and her late husband, Robert, were awarded the prestigious
Humanitarian Award from Temple Israel in 1986.  She is also
a trustee for the Columbus College of Art and Design, the Greater
Columbus Arts Council, the Columbus Museum of Art and Dialogue
Magazine.
     Ray J. Groves has been an active alumnus of Ohio State in
community and professional affairs.  He retired from Ernst &
Young in September 1994 as chairman and chief executive officer.
He is a past chairman of the Board of Trustees of Leadership
Cleveland and currently serves as a managing director and
treasurer of The Metropolitan Opera Association.  He is also a
member of the Board of Overseers for The Wharton School, the
Executive Committee for the University of California Securities
Regulation Institute, and a director for the Business Council of
New York State.
     Thekla Reese Shackelford comes from a distinguished family
of community volunteers and Ohio State graduates.  She is the
owner of School Selection Counseling, an educational consulting
business. She is or has served on the boards of Wendy's
International, Banc One Corp., H&R Block, Inc., and Sundance
Broadcasting. Her past and present trusteeships include I KNOW I
CAN, Franklin University, and the Columbus Academy. She is a
former chairperson of The Columbus Foundation and a former member
of its governing committee.
     Barbara Trueman is currently a director of Bank One Columbus
and the J.M. Smucker Company.  She is active in I KNOW I CAN,
Recreation Unlimited and the Childhood League, and has long been
active in community affairs in Central Ohio.
     Brennan heads The Brenlin Group, an organization of 17
industrial and manufacturing businesses. An attorney, Brennan is
active in education. He serves as a trustee and law-school
alumnus of Case Western Reserve University, and as chairman of
the board of St. Vincent-St. Mary High School. He has instituted
learning centers in his businesses to increase employee job
skills. Brennan is chairman of the Western Reserve Economic
Development Council, vice chairman of Akron Tomorrow and a
director of the All-American Soap Box Derby.
     In addition to Brennan, Kessler and Columbus Attorney Alex
Shumate serve as ex officio Trustee directors of the Foundation
Board.
