Gen. Galvin to Address March Grads

FORMER NATO COMMANDER TO ADDRESS WINTER QUARTER GRADUATES

     COLUMBUS -- Retired U.S. Army Gen. John R. Galvin will speak
March 17 at the winter quarter commencement of The Ohio State
University.  The ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m. in St. John
Arena.

     Galvin, who was NATO's military commander during the end of
the Cold War, is a Distinguished Visiting Policy Analyst at Ohio
State's Mershon Center.  He will become dean of the Fletcher
School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University on July 1.

     The four-star general was Supreme Allied Commander in Europe
and Commander-in-Chief of the U.S. European Command from 1987 to
1992.  Galvin headed NATO's Allied Command Europe during the Gulf
War, military operations in Africa, East-West negotiations on
arms control, and the extension of humanitarian support to
Central and Eastern European nations.

     He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in
1954 and earned a master's degree in English from Columbia
University.  He also studied at the Fletcher School, the
University of Pennsylvania, and various Army schools.

     His books include "Three Men of Boston," "The Minute Men,"
and "Air Assault."

     Galvin was the Olin Distinguished Professor of National
Security at West Point prior to joining Ohio State.  He chairs
the American Council on Germany and is a member of the board of
the Center for Creative Leadership and the Institute for Defense
Analyses.
