Global Climate Lecture Series

GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE, ENVIRONMENT'S FUTURE FOCUS OF PUBLIC TALKS

     COLUMBUS -- The Ohio State University's Byrd Polar Research

Center is presenting a series of free, public lectures on global

climate change on consecutive Wednesday evenings this winter.

Each presentation begins at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Scott

Hall, 1090 Carmack Road.  A coffee and doughnuts reception

precedes the talk at 7 p.m.

     The series began Jan. 5 with a presentation on water

resources by Eric Barron, director of the Earth Systems Center at

Pennsylvania State University.

     Other topics on the schedule are:


     Jan. 12 -- David Bromwich, research scientist at the Byrd
Center, will discuss climate predictions and models based on
present trends.

     Jan. 19 -- Lonnie Thompson, research scientist at the Byrd
Center, will talk about the recent history of global climate
changes.

     Jan 24 -- Rick Fairbanks, senior research scientist at the
Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, will discuss sensitivity of
surface waters to global change.

     Two other programs are planned for February, but have not

yet been confirmed.  Katie McGinty, director of the White House

Commission on Environmental Policy, has agreed to speak and is

tentatively scheduled for Feb. 9.











     According to Ken Jezek, director of the Byrd Polar Research

Center, the experts will speak for about 45 minutes and will

tailor their remarks for a general audience.  Audience members

are invited to ask questions following the prepared

presentations.

     "We get so many questions from interested and concerned

members of the public," Jezek said.  "These lectures will address

many of their questions and concerns."

     Free parking is available in the lot south of Carmack, which

can be entered from Kenny Road or Lane Avenue.

     The Columbus Dispatch is a partial sponsor of the lecture
