Glynn Nominated as Director of Journalism and Communication
GLYNN NOMINATED AS DIRECTOR OF JOURNALISM AND COMMUNICATION
COLUMBUS -- Carroll J. Glynn, chair of the Department of
Communication at Cornell University, has been nominated for
appointment as director of The Ohio State University School of
Journalism and Communication. The appointment, subject to Board
of Trustees approval, will be effective Sept. 1, 1998. She also
will be a professor in the school.
Glynn has been a faculty member at Cornell, in Ithaca, N.Y.,
since 1984 and became department chair in 1995. She was a
Fulbright Research Scholar in Canada in 1993 and received the
1992 Krieghbaum "under 40" Research Excellence Award presented by
the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass
Communication. Before joining Cornell's faculty, she was a
reporter for The Tampa Times.
An accomplished scholar, Glynn has published more than 30
articles in professional journals and is the co-author of a soon-
to-be-published book on public opinion. She earned her
bachelor's degree in 1977 and her master's degree in journalism
and mass communication in 1979, both from the University of
Florida. She earned her Ph.D. in mass communication from the
University of Wisconsin in 1983.
"Dr. Glynn is exactly the right person for this job," said
Randall Ripley, dean of Ohio State's College of Social and
Behavioral Sciences. "The challenge of incredibly rapid and
constant change in the fields of journalism and communication is
of great importance both to society and to universities.
"Studying that change, doing careful research on it, and
imparting the results to both our students and to society more
broadly is a central focus of colleagues in the School of
Journalism and Communication. Dr. Glynn will provide inspired
leadership as our school undertakes these tasks at an accelerated
pace and with renewed vigor."
