Go to Twitter to celebrate the 50th anniversary of John Glenn’s historic flight

Follow @GlennSchool on Twitter for a special event on Monday, Feb. 20, from 9:30 a.m. – 3 p.m. commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Friendship 7 mission that made John Glenn the first American astronaut to orbit the Earth.

On Feb. 20, 1962 at 9:47 a.m. ET, John Glenn lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida aboard a Mercury spacecraft that would orbit the earth three times before splashing down in the Atlantic Ocean four hours and 56 minutes later.

To celebrate the historic flight, the John Glenn School at The Ohio State University, in partnership with Columbus social media firm Mindset Digital, will recreate the events by live-tweeting the mission as it happened from the @GlennSchool Twitter account.

The Glenn School and Mindset Digital are reconstructing the mission from NASA’s audio transcript and will include photos, videos and Senator Glenn’s recollections to create a moment-by-moment account of the mission.
