Gold To Be Dean of Math + Physical Sciences

DEAN OF COLLEGE OF MATHEMATICAL AND PHYSICAL SCIENCES NAMED

     COLUMBUS -- Robert Gold has been nominated as dean of The
Ohio State University's College of Mathematical and Physical
Sciences.  Senior Vice President and Provost Richard Sisson
announced on Thursday (7/10) that he will recommend Gold to
President E. Gordon Gee and the Board of Trustees.  Subject to
trustee approval, Gold's appointment as Dean will become
effective retroactive to July 1.

     Gold has served as the acting dean of the college since July
1996, when a national search was initiated to find a replacement
for former Dean James Garland who left Ohio State to become
president of Miami University.

     "Professor Gold has been extremely effective in his role as
acting dean.  He has a keen awareness of what is required to
provide our outstanding faculty with the solid administrative
structure and framework that are absolutely essential to move the
College of Mathematical and Physical Sciences into the upper
academic rankings nationally, which we fully expect within the
next five years," Sisson said.

     Gold joined Ohio State's Department of Mathematics faculty
in 1968.  He earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from
Swarthmore College and a doctorate in mathematics from the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  His research field is
algebraic number theory.

     "Professor Gold is an individual of the highest personal
integrity and has earned the reputation as an honest, thorough,
and fair administrator.  Those who have had worked with him also
know him to be a resourceful and creative problem-solver who
addresses the most complex issues with care and discernment,
always taking the high road," Gee said

     "I am truly honored to serve as dean of the college,
