Grayce Sills Receives Distinguished Service Award

OHIO STATE HONORS NURSING PROFESSOR AT WINTER COMMENCEMENT

     COLUMBUS -- During Winter Quarter commencement Friday
(3/17), The Ohio State University honored a long-time leader in
mental health nursing.

     Grayce M. Sills, professor emeritus in Ohio State's College
of Nursing, received the university's Distinguished Service
Award.

     Sills joined the faculty in 1964 as an assistant professor.
By retirement in 1991, she had held a number of administrative
positions, including director of the Advanced Psychiatric Mental
Health Nursing Program, chair of the Department of Family and
Community Nursing, director of graduate studies, and acting dean
of the College of Nursing.

     Sills was a leader in shaping Ohio State's College of
Nursing, including the development of the master's and doctoral
programs and acquisition of college status.  Her commitment and
skill as a teacher earned her a Teaching and Service Award from
the College of Medicine, and the Alumni Award for Distinguished
Teaching, the university's higest honor for teaching.

     Sills is a nationally acclaimed scholar in the field of
psychiatric nursing and has served on a number of local and state
committees to improve services for the mentally ill.  In 1988
Gov. Richard Celeste appointed her to chair the Study Committee
on Mental Health Services for the State of Ohio.

     A registered nurse, Sills holds a bachelor's degree from the
University of Dayton.  She earned her M.S. and Ph.D. at Ohio
State.  She holds an honorary doctorate from Indiana University
and is a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.
