Groundbreaking for Equine Center

                         NEWS ADVISORY:
      GROUNDBREAKING FOR EQUINE CENTER IS SATURDAY MORNING

     Ground will be broken at 9 a.m. Saturday (9/17) for a $6.9
million Equine Trauma, Intensive Care and Research Center at The
Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine.  The
ceremony will take place on the site of the new center, just west
of the present Veterinary Hospital on Coffey Road. (Rainsite:
Veterinary Hospital Auditorium.)  Offering brief remarks will be
President E. Gordon Gee, Dean Glen Hoffsis, and Columbus
businessman and civic leader Daniel M. Galbreath, chair of the
fund-raising campaign for the center.  Also speaking will be
Tracy Sturgill, president of the student chapter of the American
Association of Equine Practitioners; Stephen Reed, representing
the equine faculty; and Thomas Gigliotti, president of the Ohio
Veterinary Medical Association.  Ground will be broken by two
horses pulling a plow.  Tours of the Veterinary Hospital and
presentations on current college research and programs will
follow.

     The 40,000-square-foot center will house research, treatment
and teaching facilities for equine medicine and surgery.  It is
expected to be one of the finest centers of its kind.  Ohio State
equine faculty are nationally and internationally recognized for
the expertise in equine orthopedics, exercise science, neurology,
anesthesia and respiratory diseases, as well as for residency
training and industry support.  Annually some 1,200 ill or
injured horses are hospitalized at Ohio State, and a similar
number are treated on an outpatient basis.  The new center will
support and protect Ohio's $6 billion equine industry.

     The Equine Center's construction is being funded by a
combination of state building funds and private donations,
including a $1.4 million contribution from an anonymous donor.
Additional private funding is now being sought to buy equipment
for the center.
