High on Pride Clean Up May 6

'HIGH ON PRIDE' CLEAN-UP SET FOR SATURDAY, MAY 6

     COLUMBUS -- Ohio State University students, faculty and
staff will join neighborhood residents in the second "High on
Pride" University Community Clean-Up on Saturday, May 6.

     Working in three two-hour shifts from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the
volunteers hope to top the results of the first clean-up.  During
High on Pride's first effort last Oct. 1, about 700 volunteers
removed more than 45 tons of litter and trash from the
neighborhood directly east of the campus.

     This spring's project will tackle the area south and
southeast of campus.  The new area is about one and a half times
the size of the October area and includes about 65 city blocks
with 19.3 miles of sidewalk and an equal amount of curblines,
more than 20 miles of alleyways, and 9.6 miles of roadway.  The
south boundary is Fifth Avenue, the west is Perry Street, and the
east is Fourth Street.  The northern boundary is East 12th Avenue
and the Ohio State campus.

     Volunteers will clean up the public spaces within those
boundaries, primarily by picking up litter and removing bulk
trash.  Organizers hope to have more than 1,000 volunteers
participating in three shifts, beginning at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1
p.m.  Volunteers will receive free T-shirts, free snacks and a
chance to win prizes donated by area businesses.

     The High on Pride project is sponsored by The Ohio State
University with major support from Long's Bookstore, Campus
Partners for Community Urban Redevelopment Inc., and The Ohio
State University Medical Center.  Numerous other local businesses
and organizations have provided support in the form of food, soft
drinks, trash bags, gloves, and door prizes.  The city of
Columbus's Refuse Collection Division is providing extra trash
pickups, and the university's Office of Physical Facilities is
providing equipment to lift and haul bulk trash, such as old
furniture.

     "This event is intended to again demonstrate Ohio State's
commitment to improving the environment for our students, the
residents and visitors to the neighborhoods south and east of the
university," said President E. Gordon Gee, who will be among
those volunteering their services on May 6.  "This is a great
team-building opportunity and a chance for students, staff and
faculty to work side by side on a community service project."

     Volunteers are being recruited through student
organizations, departmental offices, community groups, and ads in
the student newspaper.  Anyone interested in participating may
call 688-DIRT for a registration form or may register at the
Clean Up headquarters at the Jesse Owens Recreation Center South,
175 W. 11th Ave., on the day of the event.  Volunteers are asked
to report to the headquarters at least 15 minutes before their
shift begins.  Assignments will be made at the registration
tables, and volunteers will receive gloves, trash bags and other
equipment.

     Free food and soft drinks will be available at the
headquarters for volunteers throughout the day.  Radio station
CD101 will broadcast music.  All volunteer registration forms
will be thrown into a hopper for drawing for prizes ranging from
airline tickets to sweatshirts and gift certificates.
