Holbrook serves on board for American Council on Education

COLUMBUS – President Karen A. Holbrook of The Ohio State University has been elected to the board of directors for the American Council on Education (ACE), the major coordinating body for higher education in the United States.

The council announced her election at its 85th annual meeting in Washington, D.C. on Feb. 17. Holbrook will serve until 2005.

The Council, a comprehensive association of more than 1,800 member institutions, is dedicated to providing leadership on key higher education issues and to influencing public policy through advocacy, research and program initiatives. It coordinates the interests of all sectors of higher education into a single voice on national policy issues.

The Council’s board of directors is responsible for overseeing the management of ACE and setting the general policy direction for the organization, which represents higher education before Congress, federal agencies, the Supreme Court and the federal courts.

“The Council has a long history of helping to shape national educational policy. I am excited to be a part of that dialogue and look forward to joining with leaders from other universities to provide guidance on important initiatives in higher education,” Holbrook said.

In addition, William E. Troutt, president of Rhodes College in Tennessee, was elected chair of the board and William E. Kirwan, chancellor of the University System of Maryland and former president of Ohio State, was elected vice chair.
Other members elected to a two-year term on the board include: Lawrence Bacow, president of Tufts University in Mass.; Tito Guerrero, III, president of Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas; Muriel A. Howard, president of State University of New York College at Buffalo in New York; Joseph F. McDonald, president of Salish Kootenai College in Montana; Irving P. McPhail, chancellor of the Community College of Baltimore County in Maryland; and Laura Palmer Noone, president of University of Phoenix in Arizona.
