Honors Students Adopt Local School

                         NEWS ADVISORY:
       OSU HONORS STUDENTS ADOPT INDIANOLA MIDDLE SCHOOL;
KICK-OFF SPEAKERS ARE GORDON GEE, LARRY MIXON, JANET VOINOVICH

Students at Indianola Middle School in Columbus are being
'adopted' by students in The Ohio State University Honors
Program. The adoption will be celebrated with a kick-off
assembly ceremony on Tuesday, Jan. 17, at 1:30 p.m., at Indianola
Middle School, 420 E. 19th Ave. (corner of 19th and Indianola).
Members of the news media are invited to attend the kickoff
ceremony.

Joining the Ohio State volunteers and Indianola students to
celebrate the adopt-a-school partnership will be E. Gordon Gee,
president of Ohio State; Larry Mixon, superintendent of Columbus
Public Schools; Janet Voinovich, first lady of Ohio; and Sharon
Prentice, principal of Indianola Middle School.

Approximately 70 Ohio State honors students have volunteered to
participate in the adopt-a-school project. Each will work at
least one hour per week at the school, sharing their talents and
interests with the younger students.

Indianola Middle School is located just a few blocks east of the
Ohio State campus. Honors students have been planning the
adoption -- including scheduling, logistics and volunteer
training -- since early autumn. Through the program, they hope
to provide a community service by giving the younger students
positive learning experiences.
