Humanities Lectures Before Basketball Games

HUMANITIES SCHOLARS LECTURE SERIES OPENS FEB. 3

COLUMBUS -- What do jealousy, photography and war have in 
common?  They are all topics that will be featured during The 
Ohio State University College of Humanities Hoopla, a series of 
lectures before selected men's and women's basketball games.

The lectures, combined with great food and convenient 
basketball parking, will be held at the Holiday Inn on the Lane, 
328 W. Lane Ave.  The cost is $20 per person and pre-registration 
is required by calling Shari Lorbach of the College of Humanities 
at (614) 292-1882.

The series opens Feb. 3 at 5:30 p.m. with a talk by Dan 
Farrell, professor of philosophy, who will make a case for 
"Jealousy: The Green-eyed Monster in Fact and Fiction."  
Farrell will explain what jealousy is, how it differs from other 
emotions and why it is not as unattractive as it is perceived to 
be.

The second presentation, held Feb. 25 at 11:30 a.m., will 
feature Mark Grimsley, assistant professor of history, who will 
take issue with the standard popular conception of the "inventor 
of total war" in his talk "The Myth of the All-Destructive Fury 
of Sherman's March."

The concluding lecture, on March 6 at 5:30 p.m., will 
feature Susan Williams, assistant professor of English, who will 
talk about "Prophetic Pictures: American Writers and the Advent 
of Photography."  Williams will examine the early history of 
photography in the United States by looking at how writers 
responded to and were influenced by the invention of the 
daguerreotype.
