International law expert can discuss issues involving detainees

Detainee issues continue to dominate the news well over a year since the world first saw the abuse pictures from Abu Ghraib. The discussion includes calls to close Guantanamo Bay, Senate hearings on new detainee tribunals, a Supreme Court refusal to review a detainee's detention and the detention and trial of Saddam Hussein. Professor Mary Ellen O'Connell can discuss international law regarding these issues.

O'Connell is the William B. Saxbe Designated Professor of Law and a senior fellow of the Mershon Center for International Security. She is an expert on the law of war and has spoken and written extensively on detainee issues. She formerly taught international law for the U.S. Department of Defense and is the author, most recently, of “International Law and the Use of Force.”
