International Week is April 8-14

OHIO STATE TO EXAMINE WORLD TIES DURING INTERNATIONAL WEEK

     COLUMBUS -- A Nobel Peace Prize winner and a former U.S. 
ambassador will be on hand to discuss international relations as 
The Ohio State University's Office of International Education 
holds its annual International Week, April 8-14.

     "We want to increase the dialogue on campus to inform the 
community just how international the university is," said 
Melissa Rychener, graduate associate in the Office of 
International Education.  "We want to examine where Ohio State 
is in terms of a world community to help students see how they 
are connected to the global community."

     Some 4,000 international students attend Ohio State. 

     Betty Williams, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 
1977, will discuss her efforts to raise awareness of children's 
issues worldwide.  The director of the Global Children's 
Foundation, Williams co-founded the "Community of the Peace 
People," an organization dedicated to non-violent resistance in 
Northern Ireland.  Williams will hold a lecture April 10 from 7 
to 8:30 p.m. in the Ohio Union Conference Theater, 1739 N. High 
St.

     Mary Pendleton, a member of the Senior Foreign Service and 
the first U.S. ambassador to Moldova, will discuss her 
international experience on April 11 from 7 to 8 p.m. in 122 
Oxley Hall, 1712 Neil Ave.

     Other activities include:

     -- International Students' Art Exhibit, April 8-14 from 8 
a.m. to 5 p.m.  International students will display their 
photography, graphic design, sculpture, paintings and sketches on 
the first floor of Oxley Hall.

     -- African Symposium: "Africa in the 21st Century: 
Transcending Marginalization," a discussion on democratization, 
human rights, self-reliance and the role of regional and pan-
African organizations in Africa, April 9 from  3 to 6 p.m. in 
101A Oxley Hall.

     -- Peace Corps Reception, April 11 from 8 to 9 p.m. in 101A 
Oxley Hall.  Prospective and returned Peace Corps volunteers will 
celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Peace Corps.

     -- International Bazaar, a display of international cultures 
and foods of the many nationalities that represent Ohio State, 
April 12 from 6 to 10 p.m. in the Morrison Graduate Tower Lobby, 
196 W. 11th Ave.

     -- "After the Warsaw Pact: Security in the New Eastern 
Europe," a day-long conference, April 13 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. 
in the Faculty Club Grand Lounge, 181 S. Oval Drive.  To 
register, call the Center for Slavic and East European Studies, 
(614) 292-8770.  There is a $20 registration fee. 

     -- Indonesian Festival, featuring traditional dance, music, 
martial arts demonstration and Indonesian culture, April 14 from 
4 to 8 p.m. at Valley Dale, 1590 Sunbury Road.  Transportation 
will be provided for Ohio State students.  For more information,
