Jeff Fox Wins Goldwater Scholarship

JEFFREY FOX, KENT RESIDENT, NAMED 1995 BARRY M. GOLDWATER SCHOLAR

     COLUMBUS -- Jeffrey J. Fox, a sophomore at The Ohio State
University, has been named one of 275 recepients nationwide of
the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship.

     Fox, an honors student majoring in engineering physics, is a
1993 graduate of Theodore Roosevelt High School in Kent.  He is
the son of James and Barbara Fox, 150 N. Chestnut St., Kent.

     This year, Fox has been helping in the laboratory of Greg
Lafyatis, a physics professor at Ohio State, and he will work
with Lafyatis this summer on a research project.  After his
undergraduate study, Fox plans to earn a doctorate and pursue a
career in research.

     The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in
Education Program was created in 1986 by the U.S. Congress in
honor of the former Arizona senator.  The scholarship, aimed at
alleviating a shortage of scientists and mathematicians, was
established to foster and encourage excellence in science and
mathematics.

     Scholarships were awarded to sophomore and junior students
who possess outstanding potential and intend to pursue careers in
mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering disciplines
that contribute significantly to technological advances in the
United States.

     Students were nominated by their college or university and
chosen by an independent review committee appointed by the
Goldwater Foundation.

     The scholarship covers expenses for tuition, fees, room and
board, and books, up to a maximum of $7,000 annually.  Junior-
level recipients, such as Fox, are eligible for two years of
scholarship support.
